The application

The Curator tools are a growing family of browser extensions built to add capabilities where the websites themselves come up short. They help with the work that happens after you find something useful—collecting it, organizing it, managing it, and making sense of what you've gathered.

Each Curator started much the same way: I was trying to do something that seemed like it should be simple, only to discover that the site didn't provide the capability I needed—or the available alternatives made the job harder than it needed to be. Rather than work around the limitation every time, I built a tool for it. One problem led to another, and what began as a single extension gradually became a family of tools for making the services I already use work better for the way I want to use them.

History

The Curator family started with a fairly simple frustration: managing my music playlists. I wanted to be able to search, reorganize, move and delete items, keep lyrics with the music, and generally manage my collection in ways the available tools didn't make easy. I looked for a browser extension that would do what I wanted, particularly one that didn't require an ongoing fee, and couldn't find one. So I built it.

Once I had the first Curator working, I began noticing the same problem in other places. My YouTube playlists contained a lot of useful material, but managing them was cumbersome. More importantly, I wanted to work with the content inside the videos—to collect transcripts, search across them, and analyze multiple videos together for ideas, common themes and best practices. That led to additional Curator tools for YouTube channels, playlists and transcripts.

Then there were my browser bookmarks. Years of saving useful sites had left me with a collection that was increasingly difficult to manage. I wanted the same kinds of capabilities I had built elsewhere: search, organize, move, copy and delete items in bulk. Rather than clean them up manually, I applied the Curator approach to bookmarks.

Google NotebookLM presented a different version of the same problem. As the number of notebooks and sources grew, I found source management difficult—especially identifying sources that were similar or duplicated, removing what I no longer needed, and working with sources across multiple notebooks. That became another opportunity to apply the same idea.

What started as a solution for managing a music collection gradually became a family of tools built around a common principle: when the information is useful but managing it gets in the way, build a better way to work with it.
