The application

Pattern-Making helps turn an idea into a stained-glass project that is ready to build. Start with almost any image—a photograph, artwork, sketch, or other visual—and the tool creates a stained-glass pattern tailored to the desired skill level, complexity, and number of glass colors. The resulting design considers not just how the image should look, but how the individual pieces can realistically be cut and assembled.

Already have a pattern? Pattern-Making can start there too. It rebuilds the design, applies colors, and adjusts the cuts and piece complexity for the selected skill level. In either workflow, the tool produces a complete project package with color-specific cut patterns and material requirements, including the amount of glass needed by color, expected cutting waste, and copper foil requirements—helping move the project from “I want to make this” to “I know how to build it.”

History

Pattern-Making started with a problem I ran into while learning glass arts. As someone new to cutting and soldering glass, I found plenty of patterns to work from—but they were all based on someone else's ideas. Creating my own pattern from scratch was another matter. Designing something that looks good while also considering which shapes can actually be cut, how many pieces to use, and whether those pieces match your skill level takes experience.

What I really wanted was to take a photograph from one of my travel adventures and turn it into a glass artwork of my own. But where do you begin? I needed more than an image converted into outlines. I needed a pattern designed around my current cutting and soldering abilities—one that could simplify the image, control the number of colors and pieces, and produce shapes I could realistically work with.

That need became the starting point for Pattern-Making: a tool to help bridge the gap between an image that means something to you and a glass project you can actually build.

That opened up another direction. Instead of creating a pattern from an image, the tool could take an existing pattern, interpret and rebuild it, and then apply many of the same capabilities—adjusting piece complexity for a chosen skill level, adding or refining colors, and producing the cut patterns and material information needed to build it.

What began as a tool to help a beginner turn a personal photograph into a workable glass project had grown into something useful at both ends of the process: creating a new pattern from an image or taking an existing pattern and making it ready to build.
