The application

This tool gives non-technical users a hands-on way to explore, capture, and evaluate website styles without needing to understand the code behind them. While browsing, the user simply selects elements they like and the tool captures the characteristics that define them—colors, fonts, typography, sizing, spacing, sections, and other visual details. Those selections can be saved and organized into reusable styles or branding standards.

Saved styles can then be compared against another website to see how closely it follows the selected standard and where it differs. Multiple styles can be maintained, making it possible to explore different design directions or capture the essence of websites that provide inspiration.

More importantly, the tool is designed to go beyond analysis. A selected style can be temporarily applied to the website being viewed, allowing the user to experience different colors, typography, and styling directly on the page. The change exists only in the browser—the actual website is never modified.

The goal is not to replace professional web design tools or the people who use them. It is to give the person making the decisions direct control over exploring ideas: find something you like, capture what makes it work, compare it with what you have, and safely try it before making a real change.

History

This tool started with the idea of giving a general manager—or anyone responsible for a website without being a web designer—the ability to participate directly in decisions about how the site should look. You shouldn't need to understand CSS, font stacks, spacing rules, or web development to point at something on a website and say, “I like this. Save it.”

I wanted someone to be able to visit sites they liked, select the elements that caught their attention, and capture the colors, typography, sizing, spacing, and other characteristics that created that look. Those choices could then become a saved style rather than a collection of screenshots, notes, and descriptions that eventually have to be interpreted by someone else.

The other side of the problem was consistency. Once a style or brand standard exists, the tool can examine a website and compare what is actually being used against that standard—helping identify where colors, fonts, sizing, or other design elements have drifted.

But the idea I find most useful goes a step further: What if you could experience the change before asking anyone to make it? The goal is to let a user temporarily inject a selected style or branding into the website they are viewing and immediately experience the new look and feel. Nothing on the actual website changes. Refresh the page and it is gone.

That gives a non-webmaster a safe place to experiment—to try a different color palette, typography, or broader theme on a real website, see whether it actually works, and refine the direction before handing anything to the people responsible for the production site.

The objective isn't to replace the web designer or developer. It's to give the person making the design decisions a much better way to explore, communicate, and validate those decisions.
