Flowers from our garden These are flowers from the garden at our Lakeville home. The two photos share one simple story: I enjoy getting close enough to see the color and detail in the blooms we grow.

P18 Maple tree · Lakeville, Minnesota Lakeville home · Minnesota
The maple tree we planted We transplanted this maple when it was a small plant about two feet tall. Over the last 28 to 30 years, it has grown into a large tree that brings vibrant color to our yard each fall. We have now planted a second maple from this one in the backyard, hoping it will match the original’s brilliance.

Rabbits in the garden This rabbit is one of the many animal friends that frequent our Lakeville garden. It sometimes comes by in the morning while I’m on the porch drinking coffee. These photos catch it among the plants, stones, and grass around our home.

Cardinals at home We have three or four cardinal pairs that visit our feeder regularly. These photos bring together a pair at the feeder, close views of a male, and cardinals resting in the maple tree. Their colors are always fun to see.

Downy woodpeckers at the suet feeder The downy woodpecker is one of three kinds of woodpecker we see around our Minnesota home. About five or six visit the suet feeder in the front yard near our deck. These photos catch one feeding and two arriving together.
AP005 · Sandhill crane family Backyard wildlife
Sandhill cranes crossing the neighborhood These sandhill cranes live nearby. We spotted the two adults and their young chick moving across the neighborhood from a cornfield toward a small retention pond. It was fun to see them so close to home.

Turkeys around our neighborhood Turkeys travel through our neighborhood and sometimes visit our yard. P64 shows one of them beside our garden, a fun sight to find at home. AP007 shows a much larger gathering in a nearby field; I counted about 17 turkeys together, more than I had ever seen in one place.

Benton at home When Scott County photographed our property for its records, Benton happened to be standing in front of the house. I later found his picture on the county property listing. Benton has since passed away, and this may be one of the last photos taken of him. It makes an ordinary property record a special memory for us.

Cornhole with our neighbors Our neighbors and friends came over to play cornhole. P60 shows us playing on their boards—these were not boards I made. Those games helped start my cornhole enthusiasm, which I later carried to Venture Out. P61 shows the boards I made with lights for evening play.

Sunny morning from our Mesa deck I took this photo from our deck in Mesa and shared it in what I believe was February. Minnesota was getting snow, while we had sunshine and a temperature around 70 degrees. It was a nice contrast to the winter weather back home.

Restoring an old family portrait My neighbor had a very old photograph of a distant relative and wanted to see what could be done with it. I cleaned and edited the image using Photoshop and other tools, trying several filters, sepia tones, and colorized versions to see how each treatment changed its look. I also made a short animation from the portrait just for fun.
